Scholarships & Prizes

Information for NZSM students

NZSM students are eligible to apply for scholarships and prizes offered by both Massey and Victoria Universities.

Websites:

http://www.victoria.ac.nz/home/admisenrol/payments/scholarships/
http://awards.massey.ac.nz/

(Alternatively, go to the university’s homepage and search under ‘scholarships’)

‘BreakOut’, the only comprehensive collection of awards, scholarships and grants for New Zealanders (in addition to those listed by Victoria and Massey Universities), can be accessed free from a Victoria or Massey University computer. Elsewhere, a paid subscription is required (some public libraries may offer this facility free).

Victoria computers: http://www.fis.org.nz/databases/BreakOut.php
Massey computers: http://www.breakout.org.nz

Students are strongly recommended to spend time familiarising themselves with all websites.

International students
There are a number of scholarships available to assist you. These may be found at:
http://awards.massey.ac.nz/    (Keyword: international) http://www.victoria.ac.nz/international/planning/scholarships.aspx

Noticeboards:
A Scholarships Noticeboard may be found close to the student practice rooms at each campus.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships must be applied for. There is an online application form linked to each scholarship entry; if not, there will be a clear statement informing you where to find this application form.  Winners will be notified as soon as possible after the closing date.

With a few exceptions, closing dates are set either at the beginning (February-April) or end (October-November) of the academic year. Read all details carefully. Note that some scholarships allow you to apply well in advance of the stated closing date while others do not accept applications more than 3 months in advance of the closing date. Closing dates are strictly adhered to.

Preparing a good application takes time – do not leave it to the last day. Applications are more likely to be short-listed if all the required information is provided and in the requested manner. Often original documents are required for sighting; remember to allow time to collect these.

As new scholarships are added from time to time, students should regularly check the Scholarships Noticeboard (Victoria website) and the Latest Adverts (Massey website).

PRIZES

With a few exceptions, prizes are awarded to students at the end of the academic year. Students are nominated by NZSM staff on evidence of the student’s work, attitude and contribution to the NZSM environment throughout that year. Winners are notified at the beginning of the following year.

The following is a list of music specific (or inclusive) scholarships offered by Massey and Victoria Universities. Note that there are many non-subject specific scholarships which NZSM students may also apply for. Filters can help you search scholarships by level (undergraduate/postgraduate), gender, disabilities, ethnicity, and region. The filters for these last two are limited and do not list all ethnicities and regions for which scholarships are offered. Importantly, there is no filter for financial hardship. Though lengthy, a trawl through the complete list may uncover the scholarship tailor-made for your needs.
