Careers

BMus graduates in all areas of study will have the skills and knowledge to enter into a diverse range of careers. Careers for all music graduates include teaching, librarianship, radio work, and administrative roles in cultural organizations and other sectors of the music industry.

Performance

BMus Performance graduates will have laid the groundwork which can lead to a professional career in their chosen instrument. Recent performance graduates are now pursuing advanced study at the San Francisco Conservatory, the University of Oxford, the Manhattan School of Music, the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Graduates are also performing as members of professional orchestras, as recitalists and collaborative pianists, and appearing on the opera stages in New Zealand, Europe, Australia and North America. Graduates from the jazz programme are now working as professional musicians in New Zealand and performing in jazz ensembles at celebrated international festivals. This course of study also equips graduates with the skills necessary for employment in broadcasting, orchestral management, arts administration and music education.

Composition

The skills and experience acquired by BMus graduates in Composition and Sonic Arts can open up options such as writing for film, theatre, dance, multi-media and freelance composition work. Both composition programmes foster individual creativity, promote interaction and co-operation between composers and performers, and equip students with the professional skills necessary to work in the arts, education and commercial music sectors.

Musicology

Musicology, the study of the history, literature and sociology of music, is a branch of study that draws on research methods of history, sociology, anthropology and philosophy to examine the art of music. The study of Musicology can lead students into a wide range of rewarding careers including teaching, publishing, arts administration, broadcasting and librarianship.

Music Therapy

The postgraduate Music Therapy programme is the only programme in New Zealand that trains graduates to become professional music therapists. Working alongside the New Zealand Society for Music Therapy, graduates are eligible to apply for accreditation as Registered Music Therapists.
