Performance Activities

The New Zealand School of Music offers a variety of performance opportunities for students who are majoring in performance as well as students keen to participate in music making. Some of the activities listed here are intrinsic to performance programmes, some are entered by audition and some fulfill a more social function.

Baroque Workshop
The Baroque Workshop is an opportunity for interested students to meet each week to study baroque performance using instruments from the University's early instrument collection.

Big Band
Led by Rodger Fox, this jazz ensemble performs a collection of jazz standards, blues, funk and swing regularly throughout Wellington.

Guitar Ensemble
The NZSM Guitar Ensemble comprises the classical guitar students of the New Zealand School of Music, and are coached by Matthew Marshall and Gunter Herbig.

Indonesian Gamelan
The gamelan, a traditional Javanese instrument collection, is a vibrant part of the school of music. The ensemble plays traditional Javanese repertoire as well as collaborating with many other musicians and performers in concerts.

NZSM Orchestra
The NZSM Orchestra offers an excellent opportunity for New Zealand's future performers to gain orchestral experience.

Varsity Voices
This mixed chamber choir performs a range of mostly unaccompanied repertoire from the Renaissance period to the present.
