Richard Greager

Lecturer in Classical Performance – Voice, Diction and Language

Richard Greager (tenor) teaches Classical Voice and Diction and Language papers.

Originally from Christchurch New Zealand, Richard Greager is an active performer and has performed internationally at major opera houses and concert halls throughout Europe, United Kingdom, United States, Australia and New Zealand for the last 38 years.

With 83 operatic rôles and 47 major concert works together with an extensive song repertoire to his credit he has some 15 commercially released CDs and DVDs and has recorded extensively for the BBC, NDR, WDR, ABC Classic and Radio New Zealand Concert.

He has had a particular association during his career with The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Opera Australia and has created leading rôles in several world premiers of contemporary opera including Sir Harrison Birtwistle's Gawain at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Paul Grabowsky's Love in the Age of Therapy for Opera Australia.

Career highlights include  Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen Adelaide 2004; Alban Berg Lulu, Wozzeck Geneva, Sydney and Melbourne; Benjamin Britten The Turn of the Screw Geneva, Cologne, Sydney and Brisbane and Peter Grimes Sydney, Melbourne and Wellington.

Richard Greager is widely sought as a voice teacher and vocal adjudicator. He has adjudicated several major competitions in Australasia including the Sydney Sun Aria, MacDonalds Aria, Mobil Song Quest, Lexus Song Quest and New Zealand Aria. He has given many masterclasses and for the past 3 years has been Vocal Tutor at the New Zealand Opera School held during the summer in Wanganui.

Prior to taking the post of Lecturer at the New Zealand School of Music he was an Artist Teacher at the same institution and for some years an external examiner.
