Paul Dyne teaches Jazz Theory 1, Improvisation 1, Ensemble Workshop 1, Principal
Study (bass) 1, 2, and 3, Honours Performance, Honours Ensemble.
Head of Jazz from 1989 to 2002, he lived in Montreal, Canada from 1970 - 1980
and played there with a number of top Canadian musicians and performed with U.S.
jazz legends Sonny Stitt, alto sax and Pepper Adams, baritone sax. Since returning
to N.Z. in 1980 he has played on over 150 radio programmes for RadioNZ, has recorded
over 35 CDs and albums and has backed over 100 visiting international artists
( for example: Lee Konitz, Emily Remler, Bruce Forman, Bill Cunliffe, Ralph Sutton,
Bobby Shew, Mike Nock, Andrew Hill, Darrell Grant, Scott Hamilton, etc).
In 2004 he played on the recordings of three CDs of original material, one with
Johnny Lippiett, (released in December 2004), one with Nick van Dijk, and one
with his own Sextet and Octet, of original compositions, (Shelter of the Ti
Tree released December, 2005 on Ode Records). He also played in a Masterclass
at Massey with Michael Brecker and with Bill Cunliffe (June) and has played in
concert with Joy Yates and Dave MacRae,(July), and with Mike Nock (July). He toured
with American guitarist, Bruce Forman in September, 2004.
In 2005 he played at the Christchurch Jazz Festival with Australian jazz star
James Morrison and also performed there with his own group. He toured with visiting
American guitarist Bruce Forman and also with American flautist Holly Hofmann
and pianist Mike Wofford, and played at the Wellington Jazz Festival with Matthew
Mitchell, which was recorded for RNZ.
Research interests include improvisation concepts and the teaching of improvisation,
concepts in the teaching of jazz bass and the use of the bow (arco) in jazz bass
playing.
He is a member of the Boptet which has been playing Sunday nights at the Lido
Cafe for over 12 years and plays in a trio with Josh Hindmarsh, guitar, and Roger
Sellers, drums, every fortnight, Saturday lunchtimes at the CD Store Cafe on Lambton
Quay.
