After graduating from the Wellington Polytechnic Conservatorium of music in
1988 (at the time, the only music school in the country offering a qualification
in Jazz Performance) and then the Grove School of Music Los Angeles in
1990, Lance played with the WYO, the NZYO, the NZSO, the NZYJO,
the Roger Fox Big Band, the Dave Feehan Band, and with numerous overseas visiting
artists such as saxophonist Scott Hamilton. He also appeared in Wellington
Operatic Society's West
Side Story and HMS Pinafore, plus numerous Radio
New Zealand programmes.
After returning from the USA for further studies in music, Lance has been
teaching at the Wellington Conservatorium of Music (now the New Zealand School
of Music) since 1993. Over the last twelve yearsLance has developed the drum
and percussion programme to include classes such as Percussion Workshop, Improvisation
for Drummers and Proficiency Levels, as well as standard core subjects
like Ensemble Reading, Accompaniment, Technique and Styles. Some of Lance's
students have gone on to become drummers for cruise ships, dance shows, musicals, “pop
entertainers”, plus numerous bands
and recordings in NZ and abroad.
Recent performances and recordings include John Psathas's Saxophone
Concerto with American saxophone legend Joshua Redman, and both seasons of
the hit TV show “Dancing
with the Stars”. In 2005, Lance recorded for the Vaughn Roberts CD "Great
Stuff", a CD of original big band compositions featuring some of New Zealand's
premier Jazz Performers. He also features on Leigh
Jackson's CD Parallax and
Colin Hemingsen's CD The Rite of Swing, a unique recording of jazz
bassoon and rhythm section.
