After graduating from the Wellington Polytechnic Conservatorium of music in 1988 (at the time, the only music school in the country offering a qualification in Jazz Performance) and then the Grove School of Music Los Angeles in 1990, Lance played with the WYO, the NZYO, the NZSO, the NZYJO, the Roger Fox Big Band, the Dave Feehan Band, and with numerous overseas visiting artists such as saxophonist Scott Hamilton. After returning from the USA for further studies in music, Lance has been teaching at the Wellington Conservatorium of Music (now the New Zealand School of Music) since 1993. Over the last twelve yearsLance has developed the drum and percussion programme to include classes such as Percussion Workshop, Improvisation for Drummers and Proficiency Levels, as well as standard core subjects like Ensemble Reading, Accompaniment, Technique and Styles. Some of Lance's students have gone on to become drummers for cruise ships, dance shows, musicals, “pop entertainers”, plus numerous bands and recordings in NZ and abroad.

Recent performances and recordings include John Psathas's Saxophone Concerto with American saxophone legend Joshua Redman, and both seasons of the hit TV show “Dancing with the Stars”. In 2005, Lance recorded for the Vaughn Roberts CD "Great Stuff", a CD of original big band compositions featuring some of New Zealand's premier Jazz Performers. He also features on Leigh Jackson's CD Parallax and Colin Hemingsen's CD The Rite of Swing, a unique recording of jazz bassoon and rhythm section.
