Douglas Mews, Wellington City Organist, graduated from Auckland University
in 1979 with a Masters degree in organ and harpsichord, having studied with the
late Anthony Jennings. He then continued his harpsichord studies with Bob van
Asperen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and later expanded his interest
in historical keyboards to include the fortepiano, taking lessons from Jacques
Ogg and Bart van Oort.
As well as taking part in Wellington’s busy concert life, he broadcasts
for Concert FM and tours for Chamber Music New Zealand. With Penelope Evison (classical
flute) and Euan Murdoch (classical cello) he has recorded the Haydn Trios with
Flute for the Concordance label. As a church musician, Douglas has been choir
director at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Auckland, the English-speaking International
RC Church in The Hague, St Mary’s Church in Nelson, and at St Teresa’s
in Karori.
Keyboard Specialist at the NZSM, Douglas Mews teaches organ, harpsichord and
fortepiano, as well as keyboard harmony. He also accompanies many of the performance
students in lessons, workshops and recitals.
