NZSM/CNZ Composer-in-Residence


New Zealand School of Music/Creative New Zealand Composer Residency

July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009

This residency offers a New Zealand composer the opportunity to pursue creative activities, hosted by the New Zealand School of Music, Wellington. The term of the residency is from July 1 to June 30 each year.

The Resident Composer receives a stipend of between $45,000–$50,000 thanks to grants from Creative New Zealand, Victoria University of Wellington and private sponsorship from Dr Jack Richards.

Eligibility for the selection of Composer in Residence:

The Residency is open to any composer who is over the age of 21 and is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.

The following persons are ineligible for selection as the Resident Composer:

  • employees of Creative New Zealand,
  • members of the Arts Council, The Arts Board, Te Waka Toi and the Pacific Arts Committee,
  • students of tertiary institutions working towards the completion of a tertiary qualification, staff of the Host or any persons who have been employed by the Host in the 12 month prior to the nominated closing date for Residency applications, and
  • individuals who have been a composer-in-residence in a Creative New Zealand supported residency within the previous twelve (12) months.

Procedure for selecting Composer in Residence

Applicants are requested to include a curriculum vitae, a list of their compositions, and no more than four representative compositions, including scores and recordings.

Applicants should indicate the compositions they propose to write during the period of the residency. These compositions should, wherever possible, be intended for specific Wellington performers and performance ensembles selected from those that have registered their interest to having a creative partnership with the resident composer. (The purpose of this creative partnership is for the mutual benefit of both composer and performers/performance ensemble. However, neither composer nor performer(s) is bound contractually in any legal sense.)

Applications with proposals received by the Host by the closing date shall be circulated to the respective performers and performance ensembles and a one-day workshop organized by the Host to garner the comments and recommendations of the listed Wellington-based musical performers and performance ensembles.

After consultation with the listed Wellington performers and performance ensembles a selection committee shall meet to make the final decision. This selection committee shall comprise members of the composition staff of the New Zealand School of Music and be chaired by a representative from the Board of the Centre for NZ Music.

Facilities and opportunities to be provided by the New Zealand School of Music

The performers and performance ensembles who have entered into a creative partnership with the Composer in Residence shall undertake to schedule a performance of the composition created especially for them, within a reasonable period.

The respective performer/performance ensembles will endeavour to arrange budgets to meet the costs of this performance, including the costs of preparing performance materials, and, if required, the travel costs for the composer to travel to Wellington to attend final rehearsals and performance.

The Composer in Residence shall be invited to attend the New Zealand School of Music’s Composer Workshops, and invited to present a workshop about his/her music and ideas during one of these sessions.

The New Zealand School of Music’s shall schedule a performance of at least one composition by the Composer in Residence.

The Composer in Residence shall be invited to meet with graduate students to discuss the students’ work and other musical matters of mutual interest.

The Composer in Residence shall have access to, and the use of, facilities associated with the New Zealand School of Music, when these facilities are not otherwise in use for teaching or research.

The Composer in Residence shall have access to, and the use of, staff facilities at the New Zealand School of Music e.g. an e-mail address, the Music Library, staff club and gymnasium. In some instances fees may apply.
