Composer Workshops 2010
Every Monday in term time, 2.10 pm, Adam Concert Room, NZSM Kelburn Campus, Victoria University, Gate 7, Kelburn Parade
Composer workshops are held every Monday from 2.10 onwards during term-time in the Adam Concert Room. Composition students from all levels attend these sessions, which are also open to the general public. The varied programme includes workshop performances of student compositions, and guest presentations by established composers discussing their work and their ideas about composition.

15 March – Lucas Vis

Lucas Vis is one of the leading conductors of the twenty-first century. Having worked with composers such as Stockhausen, Cage, Rihm, Andriessen and Maderna, Lucas Vis has conducted almost all of the Dutch orchestras, and has lead the NZSO twice, including a recording of Chris Blake's "The Islands". At the invitation of the Caprice Arts Trust, with financial support from CNZ, and NZNF/ KLM, Lucas Vis will lead a Composer Workshop where he will discuss he involvement with bringing new works to life.

22 March – Lam Bun-Ching

Bun-Ching Lam is a composer, conductor and pianist from Macao. Praised as ‘alluringly exotic’ (New York Times), ‘hauntingly attractive’ (San Francisco Chronicle), and ‘powerfully descriptive’ (Star-Ledger), Bun-Ching Lam’s music defies cultural boundaries and confounds categorisation. In this Composer Workshop she presents recent concerns in her composition.
Bun-Ching Lam is a composer, conductor and pianist from Macao. She trained in Hong Kong and San Diego, and now lives in Paris and New York. Praised as ‘alluringly exotic’ (New York Times), ‘hauntingly attractive’ (San Francisco Chronicle), and ‘powerfully descriptive’ (Star-Ledger), Bun-Ching Lam’s music defies cultural boundaries and confounds categorisation. She combines her Chinese sensibility with contemporary Western compositional techniques to create a highly personal and mesmerising musical voice. In this Composer Workshop she presents recent concerns in her composition.
29 March – John Coulter

John Coulter lectures in in music at the University of Auckland. His chief area of research is electroacoustic music and multimedia composition. At this Composer Workshop he will present a forum detailing his recent work and compositional concerns.
