August is upon us and we have barely had time to draw breath after the successful New Zealand Premiere of The Red Violin at the Wellington Town Hall last Friday night.
We welcome Sonic Arts legends Curtis Bahn and Tomie Hahn from Albany, New York, who are here to perform and teach. It’s a busy month for Hahn and Bahn including two composer workshops, a performance at Auckland University and a Fridays at Five gig!
|
On Sunday 15 August the NZSM presents Our Sounds at Te Papa, a full day’s showcase of the world of music which exists at the NZSM, also featuring a performance by Hahn and Bahn.
August is also Open Day season at our parent universities so we’ll open the doors to the New Zealand School of Music too. If you know students who are interested in studying at the NZSM tell them to get along and meet our knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Finally we have bouquets to hand over to a couple of high achieving students. Benjamin Booker, a second year piano student of Richard Mapp, won the recital class at the recent Palmerston North Performing Arts Competitions, and now goes through to the National Final of the Mazda Young Performer of the Year Award in November. Buz Bryant-Green, a former student of Diedre Irons and Richard Mapp at the NZSM, was a finalist at the recent Kerikeri Piano Competition. Well done Benjamin and Buz!

New Zealand String Quartet presents Schuman and Shostakovich
In three Wellington concerts in August the New Zealand String Quartet, will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Schumann, arch-Romantic composer, by contrasting his ardent string quartets with those of the equally passionate but very different Shostakovich.
Schumann’s music is personal and full of explicit emotion. Shostakovich, writing a century later, was forced by the political climate under Stalin to present deep and intimate feelings in a coded and enigmatic language.
The NZ String Quartet’s annual series, now in its 9th year, is eagerly awaited by chamber music fans. One of the Wellington concerts, at St Mary of the Angels Church on August 28th, is a special “Candlelight” performance to reflect the romance of the music.
For a full programme of events and for booking details visit the NZSQ Website or contact Elizabeth Kerr, Manager, New Zealand String Quartet, elizabeth.kerr@nzsq.co.nz

The Paul Dyne Trio
Josh Hindmarsh (guitar), Paul Dyne (bass), and Roger Sellers (drums) were the rhythm section for the band ”The Boptet” at the Lido Cafe in Wellington for over ten years.
While they recorded with the Boptet and other groups, the trio was not recorded. Josh Hindmarsh has been working successfully in New York City and as part of a flying visit to New Zealand in August has fitted in a recording session at the NZSM. Paul Dyne was booked to do a lunchtime concert in the Concert Hall on the same day, so the concert will also be recorded, in the hope of getting some good live tracks. For this concert the Josh Hindmarsh Trio will become the Paul Dyne Trio.
The trio will play tunes from their repertoire such as Whisper Not, Birk’s Works, On a Misty Night, Will You Still Be Mine and other jazz standards.
