All existing music degrees previously offered by Massey and Victoria Universities
are now awarded jointly by the two universities as NZSM qualifications.
The NZSM jazz degree is also offered at Massey University’s Albany campus
in Auckland.
Students enrolled at Massey or Victoria Universities who wish to incorporate
Music as a subject into their Bachelor of Arts may enrol in NZSM papers. Subject
areas that complement Music as a major subject in the BA include Anthropology;
Art History; Education; English, Film and Theatre Studies; Languages; Media Studies
and Pacific Studies.
We also welcome students who wish to take Music as a supporting subject for
another major or for general interest. There are a number of music courses
for which no prior knowledge of music is required. Those offered in 2007 are:
NZSM 130 Understanding Music, NSZM 131 Hildegard to Avant Garde: Western Music
900-2005, NZSM 150 Introduction to World Music, NZSM 151 Music in New Zealand,
NZSM 152 Ragtime to Rap, NZSM 251 Pacific Islands Music and Dance 1, and NZSM
252 Music of Asia 1.
Students who wish to complete a BA with Music as the major subject may enrol
in either a BA in Music Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, or a BA
in Music at Massey University.
Students at the NZSM also will be able to complete double degrees, such as
a BMus at the NZSM and a BA at Massey or Victoria Universities. The two universities
will award the BMus jointly, and the university at which it was completed will
award the BA. Cross-crediting provisions between the degrees will continue.
