NZSM Young Musicians Programme
NZSM Young Musicians Programme was established in 1999 to enhance the opportunities available for gifted
young musicians to prepare for future tertiary study. The NZSM Young Musicians Programme is a Saturday
afternoon programme designed to supplement regular private tuition and the school
music curriculum. Students work with the cream of New Zealand’s performers,
composers and music educators as well as overseas visitors and faculty from the
New Zealand School of Music. The NZSM Young Musicians Programme is divided into seven sections: strings,
wind (including brass), piano, jazz, jazz singing, classical singing and composition.
Analysis, musicianship and aural skills are also studied each week as part of
our holistic approach to learning music. Solo recitals are given weekly by visiting
artists as they pass through Wellington. The NZSM Young Musicians Programme endeavours to make scholarships
available to as many students as possible and these are awarded on both a needs
and merit base. Acceptance is by audition and interview.
NZSM Young Musicians Programme has gained widespread recognition, with many former students moving
on to continue their studies at university level. Recently, students and tutors
travelled to the Hawke’s Bay to perform concerts and take part in master
classes. They have also given concerts at the Wellington Youth Arts Festival and
the Mahara lunchtime concert series. Nationally-recognised achievements by NZSM Young Musicians Programme
students include their participation in the National Youth Orchestra, and selection
for the finals of the Chamber Music New Zealand Contest for schools.
